Mary Pezzella
PT, DPT, MT-BC
Mary was born and raised in Tucson, AZ and in her youth she split her time between playing music, performing in theater, and participating in various sports, including cross country, swim team, and softball. This early blend of creative and athletic pursuits laid the foundation for her future career.
Mary earned her undergraduate degree in Music Therapy in Tempe, AZ, where she honed her skills using music as a therapeutic tool for rehabilitation. She worked in hospice care and with children with disabilities, helping patients use music to achieve non-musical goals and improve their quality of life.
After nearly six years in the field of music therapy, Mary sought to broaden her scope of practice in rehabilitative care and started exploring other advanced degrees. This eventually led to her moving up north to Flagstaff, AZ to pursue her Doctorate in Physical Therapy as this field most aligned with her personal and professional interests.
Mary has a deep passion for human movement and understanding what the human body is capable of. She is dedicated to helping her patients return to the activities they love, while encouraging a sense of fun and well-being throughout the process.
Interests
Mary discovered a passion for mountain sports in 2013, falling in love with rock climbing and mountain biking as her main hobbies. Over time, she naturally expanded her hobbies to include skiing, trail running, and now since moving to Boulder, scrambling the Flatirons has been added to the list. Pursuing these activities has allowed her to explore incredible landscapes and summit peaks in various locations across the western US and abroad. Playing in the mountains is where Mary feels most at home, so when she's not in the clinic or serenading her dog Nalah, you’ll likely find her out and about with her husband and friends doing one or all of the above.
Treatment Philosophy
Mary's treatment philosophy combines creativity with a holistic approach, drawing on her non-traditional background. She integrates functional exercise, motor retraining, mind-body awareness, manual techniques, and dry needling to achieve patient goals. Emphasizing "patient-driven" care, Mary encourages patients to be active participants throughout the treatment process. Above all, she prioritizes the patient-clinician relationship, aiming to help patients return to the activities they love as quickly and safely as possible.
